Hello! My name is LTJG Uniquca Abrams, I am an Eastern Kentucky University graduate from the Fall 2020 Baccalaureate Nursing program. The exceptional education I received at EKU paved the way for my current role in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps.
The USPHS Commissioned Corps is one of the eight uniformed services in the United States, distinguished by its non-military status and its exclusive dedication to safeguarding and advancing the nation's public health. As Public Health Service officers, we are on the front lines, addressing public health threats and ensuring the well-being of underserved communities.
In my role as a Public Health Service officer, I am part of a diverse team comprising eleven different disciplines, including physicians, dentists, veterinarians, dieticians, scientists, and, of course, nurses. We serve throughout the federal government to provide essential health care services to underserved and vulnerable populations and deploy for public health or global emergencies.
Currently, I am serving as a Nurse in obstetrics for the Department of Health and Human Services within the Indian Health Service in Chinle, AZ. This community lies at the heart of the Navajo Nation, where the challenges of rural healthcare are profound. Resources are not always readily available or accessible due to the barriers created by the rural nature of living on the reservation. Some residents adhere to a more traditional lifestyle and live in Hogans, the Navajo traditional dwelling, often without running water or electricity. Sometimes by personal choice and other times due to circumstance. Many of the patients I serve have higher rates of maternal morbidity/mortality and pregnancy-related mortality rates of about two-three times higher compared to their white counterparts. Additionally, they experience higher rates of diabetes, high blood pressure, pre-eclampsia, obesity, and suicidal ideation. Despite these challenges, I find immense fulfillment in my work. Being able to provide care and support to this resilient community is a privilege, and my passion for nursing and public health continues to grow. I hope my journey inspires others to explore the rewarding opportunities within the USPHS Commissioned Corps and consider a career dedicated to public health service.
Very Respectfully,
LTJG Uniquca Abrams
